Asia eSIM: how it works

A regional plan covers several countries with a single eSIM profile: you cross borders without buying a new plan or switching networks. Plans for this area start at €3.28/GB and are ranked here by price per GB, the only metric that compares different data allowances honestly.

Not every plan covers exactly the same countries: the "Plan" column shows how many are included in each offer. Check that your stops are on the list before buying: the full list of the area's 26 countries is further down.

Asia: how much data should you plan for?

  • 1 GBLight use: maps, messaging, a few searches. Plenty for a weekend.
  • 5 GBTypical use: social media, photos, the odd stream. Ideal for a week.
  • 10 GB+Heavy use: video, tethering, remote work. For longer itineraries.

On a multi-country trip, count in days rather than stops: data goes at the same rate from one country to the next. With Wi-Fi to fall back on, 1 GB a week is enough for most travellers.

Asia: why a regional plan rather than several country plans?

  • One install, once

You install one eSIM profile before you leave, and it stays active from country to country. No new eSIM to buy and activate at every border.

  • No paperwork at every stop

Buying a local SIM usually means a passport, sometimes proof of address. On a multi-country itinerary that repeats at every stop.

  • Cheaper than stacking plans

For three stops or more, a regional plan generally works out cheaper than three country plans in a row, and far cheaper than your carrier's roaming.

  • You keep your main SIM

Your usual number stays active for calls and texts. The eSIM only handles mobile data: the two run side by side.

Asia: practical tips

  • Turn data roaming on

A regional eSIM uses a foreign profile in every country you cross. Turn data roaming on in your settings, or it will not connect anywhere.

  • Check coverage at each border

The partner network changes from country to country. If you have no signal after crossing a border, switch network selection to manual and restart the phone.

  • Preload your maps

Download your routes offline before you leave. The legs between two countries often run through poorly covered border areas.

Frequently asked questions

It is a single data plan valid across several countries in the area. You install one eSIM profile and it stays active as you move from country to country. Handy for a multi-country trip, where a national plan would mean buying a new eSIM at every border.

No. Providers sell several versions of the same regional plan with different coverage. The number of countries included is shown for each offer in the table above. Check your itinerary is covered before buying.

It depends on your trip. For a single destination, a national plan is almost always cheaper per GB. From two or three countries onwards, a regional plan wins, and it saves you reinstalling an eSIM along the way.

No. The profile switches automatically to a partner network in the country you land in. If the connection takes a while, restart your phone or select the network manually in your settings.

The eSIM simply won't connect: you lose data, but you are not charged beyond your plan. In that case, get an eSIM for that country from its own destination page.
