iPhone XR and eSIM: compatible yes, but with three limits to know (2026)
Yes, the iPhone XR is eSIM compatible. Released in 2018, it belongs to the very first wave of iPhones to carry a digital SIM card, with the XS and XS Max. Eight years later, it remains perfectly usable with a travel eSIM.
But the short answer hides three limits the compatibility lists never mention: the iPhone XR runs only one active eSIM at a time, some imported units have no eSIM chip at all, and the device has been stuck on iOS 18 since 2025.
We go through the compatibility confirmed by Apple, the second-hand trap, step-by-step activation with the QR code, what the lack of dual eSIM changes, the real consequences of the end of updates, the most frequent installation failures, and what to look at when choosing a travel eSIM on this model.

Is your device eSIM compatible?
Pick your brand, then your model: instant verdict.
Is the iPhone XR eSIM compatible?
Yes, unambiguously. Apple places the iPhone XR in the "one physical SIM card and one eSIM" category, alongside the 2nd-generation iPhone SE, the XS, 11, 12, 13, 14 and later models. The eSIM chip has been soldered to the motherboard since the device's release in October 2018.
In practice, your iPhone XR can run two lines at the same time: your usual nano-SIM in the tray, and a downloaded eSIM on top. That is exactly what you need to travel without losing your home number.
To clear any doubt on your exact unit, one test never lies: dial *#06# in the Phone app. If an EID number shows below the IMEI, the eSIM chip is there. If there is no EID, jump straight to the next section, your model is one of the exceptions.

The second-hand trap: the iPhone XRs that have no eSIM
That is the point the compatibility lists keep quiet about, and it becomes central when buying a second-hand iPhone XR in 2026, which is most buyers today.
Models sold in mainland China have no eSIM. Apple shipped a version with two physical nano-SIM slots there, for local regulatory reasons. On those units, no manipulation will make an eSIM appear: the chip does not exist. To date, only the iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM in mainland China.
In Hong Kong and Macao, the situation is mixed: some iPhone models also take two nano-SIMs instead of an eSIM. An XR imported from those regions may therefore also be unable to do eSIM.
The reflex before buying: ask the seller to dial *#06# and send you the screenshot. No EID, no eSIM, and no update will ever change that. A SIM tray taking two cards is the other telltale sign.
The rat's advice: On second-hand listings, be wary of prices well below market on this model. It is often an Asian import, sometimes excellent otherwise, but without eSIM. For a traveller, the discount does not make up for the lost feature.
How to activate an eSIM on iPhone XR
The procedure has not changed since iOS 16 and takes a few moves. Plan for a Wi-Fi connection: the profile downloads from the provider's servers.
Step 1: open Settings, then Mobile Data.
Step 2: tap "Add Mobile Plan" or "Add eSIM" depending on your version's wording.
Step 3: scan the QR code received by email after your purchase. If you are reading that email on the phone itself, choose manual entry instead, using the details the provider lists next to the code.
Step 4: give the line an explicit name, "Japan" or "Spain" rather than "Secondary". You will thank yourself on the way home, when deciding which one to delete.
Step 5: choose which line serves mobile data. That is the setting that really matters, more below.
If you prefer following the operation on video, Apple Support runs through it in under two minutes:
Do the installation the day before departure, at home. The profile sits without activating until you select it, and you avoid discovering a QR code that will not scan at the airport, exactly when you have no connection left.
One active eSIM: what the iPhone XR cannot do
Your iPhone XR can memorise eight eSIM profiles or more, but it runs only one at a time, alongside the physical nano-SIM. That is the fundamental difference with recent models.
Active dual eSIM, two digital lines simultaneously with no physical card, is only supported from the 3rd-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 13. The XR, like the 11 and 12, sticks to the one-card-plus-one-eSIM formula.
In practice, that almost never bothers a traveller. The common scenario stays the same: the home SIM in the tray to stay reachable on your number, the travel eSIM for local data. You switch from one eSIM profile to another in the settings in seconds, without reinstalling anything.
The limit is only felt if you want two foreign data lines active at once, for instance on an itinerary straddling two countries poorly covered by a single regional eSIM. In that precise case, you switch manually. The full detail of the combinations is in our article on how many eSIMs an iPhone can handle.
iOS 18, end of the line: what it changes for your eSIM
Here is the information the compatibility pages have not updated. The iPhone XR no longer receives new iOS versions. Apple dropped it from iOS 26 onwards, and the current version, iOS 27, only supports the iPhone 11 and later models, plus the 2nd-generation iPhone SE and later.
Your XR therefore stayed on iOS 18, its last major version. Apple keeps publishing security patches for that branch, but new features no longer reach it.
The good news: the eSIM works normally. Everything you need arrived well before iOS 18. QR code installation, multiple profile management, transferring a line to another iPhone, choosing the data line: none of that depends on a newer version. A travel eSIM bought today installs on an XR like on an iPhone 17.
What you should anticipate, however, is the horizon. Security patches for an abandoned branch eventually stop, and some apps gradually raise their minimum iOS version. If you plan to keep this phone for several years, the question is not the eSIM, it is the software ageing of the device as a whole.

The eSIM will not install on your iPhone XR: the frequent cases
No EID at *#06#. Your unit has no eSIM chip: it is a mainland China model, or a Hong Kong or Macao model with two physical slots. Nothing to try, you need another device or a local physical SIM.
The phone is carrier-locked. A still-locked XR will refuse a competitor's profile. Unlocking is free in France on request from the original carrier. It is the number one cause of failure on second-hand phones.
The QR code has already been used. An eSIM profile installs only once. If you deleted the line by mistake, the same code will no longer work: ask the provider for a reissue, and they will send a new code with a new ICCID.
The profile installs but nothing gets through. Check two settings in order: data roaming must be enabled on the eSIM line, and that line must be selected as the mobile data source. That is the duo that solves most arrival-day failures.
You have no connection to download the profile. Installation requires internet. Hence the rule: install before leaving, on Wi-Fi, never on landing.
Which travel eSIM for an iPhone XR?
Technically, no restriction: your iPhone XR accepts profiles from every travel eSIM provider, exactly like a recent model. The choice therefore follows the same criteria as for any phone.
One point deserves attention on this model, though. The XR picks up 4G, not 5G: paying extra for a plan sold on its 5G speed makes no sense here. At equal volume, take the cheapest offer.
The market has some twenty providers, between Airalo, Holafly, voilà, Saily, Ubigi, Nomad and Yesim. Each has its positioning, between unlimited data, multi-country coverage and price per gigabyte. voilà, for instance, positions itself on value for money, with an eSIM that is easy to install and an easy-to-use app, and human customer support reachable 24/7.
That is the trade-off the comparator settles, with hand-checked prices: the page of compared eSIM carriers and providers gives the overview, destination by destination.
In short: the iPhone XR remains a very good travel companion in 2026, provided you check its EID before a second-hand purchase, accept the one-card-plus-one-eSIM formula, and know it will no longer receive new iOS versions.
