Best eSIM for Indonesia and Bali in 2026: 6 providers compared
You are heading to Bali, Java or Lombok and want data the moment you land, without paying your carrier's roaming rates. An Indonesia eSIM installs before you leave, activates on arrival and costs under €1 per GB at the cheapest providers.
We ran 6 providers through the same grid: price per GB, network used on the ground (Telkomsel, Indosat, XL), coverage across the islands, support, app, plan flexibility and activation. The ranking first, then each offer in detail.

voilà eSIM: the best value eSIM for Bali and Indonesia
The lowest price per GB in this comparison (€0.63/GB), an eSIM that connects to Telkomsel, XL, Indosat or Smartfren depending on where you are, and human support you can reach at any hour. The five alternatives still make sense depending on how you travel.
How we ranked these eSIMs
Each eSIM is scored on six criteria, with the same weights for every destination. Price per GB and network coverage each count for a quarter of the score: in Indonesia, Java and Bali are very well covered, the big islands reasonably, the small islands much less. The network a provider picks therefore matters as soon as you leave Bali.
- Price per GB25 %
Real cost per gigabyte, on each provider's cheapest plan per GB, excluding promotions.
- Network coverage25 %
Signal in Bali and Java, but also on Lombok, Flores, Sumatra and small islands like Nusa Penida or the Gilis.
- Reliability15 %
Connection stability, how serious the provider is and how consistent its claims are.
- Support15 %
Channels available, opening hours, human or bot, response time.
- Activation and app10 %
Ease of install, clarity of the app, usage tracking.
- Plan flexibility10 %
Choice of data amounts and durations, top-ups, unlimited, multi-country plans.
On these criteria, voilà eSIM comes out on top with the lowest price per GB in the comparison (€0.63/GB), access to the Telkomsel network that covers the archipelago best, and the only 24/7 human support in the ranking.
Scores are the opinion of the eSIMrat editorial team, based on the criteria above, not customer reviews. eSIMrat earns a commission on links to its partners, which does not affect the ranking.

1. voilà eSIM
€0.63/GBTelkomsel, XL, Indosat, SmartfrenData plans from 1 to 50 GBLowest price per GB, four networks, 24/7 human support
voilà eSIM connects to four Indonesian carriers, including Telkomsel, by far the best island coverage in the country: Bali, Java, Lombok, Sumatra and a good share of the small islands. When Telkomsel weakens, the eSIM switches to XL, Indosat or Smartfren.
Pricing goes down to €0.63/GB, the lowest price per GB in this comparison. Plans run from 1 to 50 GB over 7, 15 or 30 days with no commitment, and tethering is included: the best value for money in the ranking.
The eSIM is easy to install and the app easy to use: two minutes before you leave, automatic activation when you land. Customer support is human, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the only one in the comparison to offer it. An eSIMrat promo code takes another 5% off.
Pros
- Lowest price per GB in the comparison (€0.63/GB)
- Telkomsel plus three other networks, the best island coverage
- 24/7 human support, simple app, tethering included

The catalogue mixes data packs and unlimited plans from 1 to 15 days, the cheapest unlimited plans in the ranking over a week. The site prices in US dollars and the euro follows the day's rate. Activation is by QR code, support answers by email or chat in English, and the app stays basic next to Airalo's or Saily's.

Cons

Why choose an eSIM for Bali and Indonesia?
In Bali as in the rest of Indonesia, three options are available to you to get internet: a travel eSIM purchased before departure, a local SIM card from Telkomsel or XL purchased on-site, or roaming from your usual plan when it includes Indonesia. For a stay lasting from a few days to a few weeks, an eSIM ticks the most boxes: ready before takeoff, no hassle on-site, and at the price of a local plan.
| Criterion | Travel eSIM | Local SIM card | Your carrier's roaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchase | Online, before departure | At the counter, with your passport | Nothing to buy if your plan includes it |
| IMEI Registration | None | At the carrier's counter | None |
| Usual number | Kept | Replaced on a single SIM slot phone | Kept |
| Data | From 1 GB to unlimited | Packs of 18 to 70 GB over 30 days | Depending on your plan, often out-of-plan charges |
| Connection | Upon landing | After purchase, at the airport or in town | Upon landing |
The rat's advice: first check what your mobile plan includes in Indonesia: out-of-plan roaming can get very expensive very quickly. A travel eSIM takes over without affecting your line.
Advantages of using an eSIM in Indonesia
Three advantages make the difference once you arrive, especially for a stay of less than three months.
Avoid IMEI blocking: a phone purchased abroad must be registered to work with an Indonesian SIM card, otherwise the network will block it. A travel eSIM connects via roaming, just like a foreign SIM, and Indonesian customs specify that these travelers have no IMEI to declare. No counter, no forms.
Immediate connection: the eSIM is installed on your device via Wi-Fi the day before departure. Upon landing in Denpasar, it connects to the Indonesian network automatically: you can order your Grab or Gojek and notify your loved ones before you even pick up your luggage, without having to queue at the SIM card counter.
Keep your usual number: your regular SIM card stays in the phone. You continue to receive your banking SMS and validation codes, WhatsApp keeps your number, and the eSIM handles the data. With a local SIM card, you would instead have to remove your regular SIM in a phone with only one SIM slot.
This is what voilà eSIM, the top of our ranking, offers: excellent value for money, an eSIM that is easy to install with an easy-to-use app, and human customer support, 24/7, if anything goes wrong on the spot.
The video comparison
The following four minutes recap the rankings in images: the price per GB for each provider and the offer to choose based on your trip to Bali or the rest of Indonesia. Watch it here or directly on our Indonesia eSIM video comparison.
The verdict is the same as above: voilà eSIM takes the lead in value for money, with an eSIM that is easy to install, an easy-to-use application, and human support reachable 24/7. The prices shown on screen date from the filming: those on the Indonesia comparator are kept up to date.
eSIM or local SIM card in Bali?
A local SIM card can be purchased at the Telkomsel counter at Denpasar airport, in an official store in town, or from a retailer, using your passport. Telkomsel is the best-established operator in the archipelago, ahead of Indosat and XL.
At the airport counter, the Telkomsel tourist packs displayed in 2026 range from 250,000 rupiahs for 18 GB over 30 days, valid in Java, Bali, and Lombok, to 600,000 rupiahs for 60 GB valid throughout Indonesia, according to the Traveltomtom report. The same packs cost significantly less in town, provided you find a shop once you arrive.
The purchase involves registering the card in your name and your phone's IMEI. The pack expires after 30 days, and your usual number will no longer work if your phone only has a single SIM slot.
A travel eSIM skips all of that: installed before you leave, it roams on the Indonesian networks the moment you land and your home SIM stays in place for calls and texts. Every plan in the Indonesia comparator is sorted by price per GB, and if Bangkok or Phuket comes next, the Thailand eSIM comparison uses the same grid.
IMEI Law in Indonesia: what it means for your phone
Indonesia blocks phones on its networks if the IMEI, the device's serial number, is not registered. This rule targets devices purchased abroad and used with an Indonesian SIM card. According to Indonesian customs (Bea Cukai), everything depends on the length of stay:
Maximum 90-day stay: the IMEI is registered at the operator's counter when you purchase your local SIM card.
Stay of more than 90 days: the declaration is made to customs, on their website or via the Mobile Bea Cukai application, limited to two phones or tablets per traveler. The exemption from duties and taxes is capped at a value of 500 US dollars: beyond this, import taxes apply.
With a travel eSIM: nothing to do. Travelers using a foreign roaming SIM card don't have an IMEI to register, and that is exactly how an eSIM like voilà eSIM works.
How many GB should I plan for Bali and Indonesia?
For two weeks in Bali, 10 GB is enough for most travelers: GPS, Grab or Gojek rides, WhatsApp, social media, and a few photos sent every day. Count on 20 GB if you share your connection, post many videos, or work remotely, and 3 to 5 GB for one week with light usage.
Wi-Fi is common in hotels, villas, and cafes in Canggu, Ubud, or Seminyak, which lightens your data consumption. It becomes rare as soon as you head towards Nusa Penida, the Gilis, or North Bali: download your offline maps before the crossing.
To estimate your needs as accurately as possible, our mobile data usage calculator calculates based on your usage. At voilà eSIM, Indonesia plans range from 1 to 50 GB, for 7 to 30 days.
What to check on your phone before buying
Two conditions: a phone that is eSIM-compatible (iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and later, most Samsung Galaxy S and Z since 2020) and unlocked from any carrier. The full list is on our eSIM-compatible phones page.
Once the eSIM is installed, keep your main line active for calls, set the eSIM as the default data line and turn on data roaming for the eSIM only. In Bali you get signal as you step off the plane.
