APN (Access Point Name)

Installing and activating

The APN (Access Point Name) is the setting that tells the phone which gateway to use to reach the internet on a mobile network. Every carrier has its own. With a modern eSIM the APN is almost always configured automatically when the profile installs: in the vast majority of cases you have nothing to do.

Why it matters when travelling

The classic symptom of an APN problem: the eSIM is installed, the phone has the local network, the bars are there… but no data goes through. Before contacting support, this is THE setting to check: the expected value is always in the purchase email or in the provider's FAQ.

One particular case: some budget providers still use APNs you have to type by hand. Not a deal-breaker, but a friction to know about before buying, especially if you are not comfortable in the settings.

The misconception

“If the internet does not work on arrival, the eSIM is faulty.”

In most cases it is not: data roaming is switched off, or the APN is wrong. Switch data roaming on for the eSIM line, check the APN, restart the phone. Those three moves solve most arrival-day failures.

In practice, device by device

On iPhone

  1. Settings, then Mobile Data, then pick your eSIM line.
  2. Open Mobile Data Network: the APN field is there.
  3. Type exactly the value given by your provider (lowercase included), then go back to save.

On Android

  1. Settings, then Network & internet (or Connections), then your eSIM line.
  2. Open Access Point Names and add an APN with the provider's exact value.
  3. Save, select the new APN, then toggle flight mode on and off to force a reconnection.

What it changes when you compare

An automatically configured APN is part of what “an eSIM that is simple to install” means. In the esimrat comparisons, installation friction (manual APN, mandatory app, multi-step activation) counts as much as price per GB: a cheap plan that leaves you offline for a whole evening is not a good deal.

Compare eSIM plans by destination

The rat's tip: Before leaving, screenshot your provider's “installation” page, APN included. On arrival, no connection means no way to read the online FAQ. The screenshot, on the other hand, is always there.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to configure an eSIM's APN?

No. With the vast majority of recent travel eSIMs, the APN installs automatically with the profile. Manual configuration only concerns certain providers or certain phones.

Can a wrong APN cost money?

No, an incorrect APN simply stops data going through. The financial risk comes from elsewhere: leaving data roaming active on your home line outside Europe instead of on the eSIM line.

Where do I find my eSIM provider's APN?

In the purchase confirmation email, in the provider's app, or on its help page. The value is specific to each provider: there is no point looking for a “universal” APN.
