Best eSIM for Sri Lanka: which one to choose in 2026?

The Sigiriya Rock and the cultural triangle, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, the tea plantation train ride to Ella, the Yala safaris, the beaches of Mirissa, and the Galle Fort: in Sri Lanka, you move from one stop to the next by train, tuk-tuk, or with a driver, and you need internet for Google Maps, PickMe, bookings, and WhatsApp. A Sri Lanka eSIM is installed before departure, activates upon landing in Colombo, and you keep your usual SIM for your bank's SMS.

The country has three mobile networks, Dialog, SLT-Mobitel and Hutch, and not all travel eSIMs use the same one. We scrutinized 5 providers using the same criteria: price per GB, network used on-site, coverage from the coast to the highlands, support, ease of the app, and flexibility of the plans, including unlimited options. You will also find out what your usual plan is worth, the tourist SIM card sold at the airport, and the ETA, the mandatory travel authorization. The ranking first, then each offer in detail.

7.6/10

The cheapest small plan in the comparison, 1 GB for 7 days at €1.90, a 3 GB plan for 30 days at €5.50 for two weeks of Google Maps and WhatsApp, no blocked applications, unlimited hotspot sharing, installation in two minutes via an easy-to-use app, and human support reachable 24/7. Regarding the price per GB, it ranks fourth, at €1.37/GB, and only runs on Hutch, in 4G: Airalo, Ubigi, and Yesim are cheaper for larger volumes.

How these eSIMs were ranked

Each eSIM is rated on six criteria, weighted for Sri Lanka. The price per GB and network coverage carry the most weight. Since the absorption of Airtel Lanka by Dialog, completed in August 2024, three networks remain: Dialog, by far the leader in subscriber numbers, SLT-Mobitel, and Hutch, the smallest, with approximately one in ten subscribers according to OperatorWatch estimates. In its February 2026 report, Opensignal gives Dialog the awards for coverage and reliability, and SLT-Mobitel those for speed. Esimzon, featured in our other comparisons, is excluded: on October 6, 2026, all its Sri Lanka plans were listed as out of stock. The ratings are the editorial team's opinion, not an average of customer reviews.

  • Price per GB25 %

Cost per gigabyte based on the cheapest plan from each provider, excluding occasional promotions.

  • Network coverage25 %

Get coverage in Colombo, on the south coast, in the cultural triangle, in Kandy, in the highlands of Ella and Nuwara Eliya, and in the national parks.

  • Reliability15 %

Connection stability, reliability of the partner operator, and provider reputation.

  • Support15 %

Available channels, schedules, human or automated response.

  • Activation and application10 %

Simple installation, clear app, consumption tracking.

  • Flexible plans10 %

Choice of data volumes and durations, unlimited, top-ups, hotspot sharing.

Based on these criteria, voilà eSIM comes out on top thanks to its small plans, 1 GB at €1.90 and 3 GB at €5.50, a simple app, and 24/7 human support, with a price per GB of €1.37/GB that places it fourth out of five and a single network, Hutch. Airalo takes second place with the lowest price per GB, on SLT-Mobitel. Ubigi is third: two networks, Hutch and Mobitel, and a 30-day 10 GB plan for €11.

Scores are the opinion of the eSIMrat editorial team, based on the criteria above, not customer reviews. eSIMrat earns a commission on links to its partners, which does not affect the ranking.

The ranking of eSIMs for Sri Lanka

The 5 eSIMs compared, from the best rated to the least rated. The price per GB shown is that of the cheapest price per gigabyte for each provider: a 50 GB 30-day plan from Airalo, Ubigi and voilà eSIM, a 30 GB plan from Yesim, and a 20 GB plan from Saily. The cheapest GB costs less than half of the most expensive one: on a large volume, the difference shows on the bill.

Each Sri Lanka eSIM in detail

  1. voilà eSIM

    1. voilà eSIM

    7.6/10
    €1.37/GBHutch (4G)Data plans, 1 to 50 GB, 7 to 30 days

1 GB at €1.90, 3 GB for 30 days at €5.50, no blocked apps, 24/7 human support

voilà eSIM uses Hutch, the country's third network, via 4G according to its Sri Lanka page. This is its main limitation: Dialog offers better coverage in remote areas and SLT-Mobitel is faster, and Hutch does not yet have a 5G license. In cities and along major tourist routes, from Colombo to Kandy and from Galle to Ella, 4G is sufficient for Google Maps, PickMe, and WhatsApp calls. The brand states that no applications are blocked (WhatsApp, TikTok, banking apps), and tethering is unlimited, which is practical when traveling as a pair with a driver.

In terms of price, its strength lies in small data volumes: the 1 GB for 7 days at €1.90 is the cheapest in this comparison for this volume, more than €1.50 cheaper than Saily, and the 3 GB for 30 days is priced at €5.50. On larger volumes, it falls behind: €1.37/GB on the 50 GB at €68.30, fourth of five on price per GB, and the 20 GB costs €28.70, compared to €16.50 at Airalo. The code ESIMRAT gives a 5% discount on your first order, which can be found on the promo code page, improving the value for money.

The rest follows: the eSIM is installed in two minutes via an easy-to-use application, with top-ups and usage tracking in one place, you have 180 days to activate it after purchase, the brand announces a refund in case of a problem, and human support responds 24/7 on WhatsApp. Other limitations: no unlimited data, no Sri Lankan number (calls go through WhatsApp, Viber, or FaceTime).

    Pros

    • 1 GB for 7 days at €1.90, the cheapest for this volume, 3 GB for 30 days at €5.50
    • No blocked applications, unlimited hotspot sharing
    • Simple to install eSIM, easy-to-use app, 24/7 human support

    Cons

    • A single network, Hutch, in 4G
    • Fourth lowest price per GB out of five, no unlimited option
  2. Airalo

    2. Airalo

    7.4/10
    €0.65/GBSLT-Mobitel (eSIM Ella+ on Hutch)Data plans from 5 to 50 GB, 15 and 30 days, unlimited from 3 to 30 days

The lowest price per GB, 50 GB at €33, an eSIM with local minutes

Airalo has the lowest price per GB in the comparison: €0.65/GB on the 50 GB 30-day plan, sold for €33 on October 6. Its data eSIM uses SLT-Mobitel, voted the best mobile network in the country by Ookla at the end of 2025, running on 4G according to its spec sheet. The 20 GB plan costs €16 for 15 days and €16.50 for 30 days, which is more than €10 less than Saily. Airalo also sells a second eSIM, Ella+, on Hutch, which includes local minutes and SMS (10 minutes and 10 SMS per GB), useful for calling a hotel or a driver; your Sri Lankan address is then requested via SMS after activation.

Its limitations lie in the small data volumes and the unlimited options. There is no 1 GB data eSIM plan: the first step is the 5 GB 30-day plan at €8.50. Its unlimited option ranges from €17.50 for 5 days to €66 per month, with speeds reduced to 1 Mbit/s after 3 GB per day: Yesim is cheaper starting from 10 days. Support is provided via chat, in English.

    Pros

    • The lowest price per GB, 50 GB for €33 over 30 days
    • SLT-Mobitel network, the fastest according to Ookla, and an eSIM with local minutes

    Cons

    • No small data plans under 5 GB
    • Unlimited, throttled to 1 Mbit/s after 3 GB per day, support in English
  3. Ubigi

    3. Ubigi

    7.3/10
    €0.78/GBHutch and SLT-MobitelData plans from 3 to 50 GB, unlimited for 7, 15, and 30 days

Two networks, 10 GB for 30 days at €11, top-ups without reinstalling a profile

Ubigi, a subsidiary of Transatel (NTT group), is the only one in the comparison to announce two Sri Lankan networks: Hutch and Mobitel. If one has poor coverage in the highlands, your phone can switch to the other. Its practical advantages: prices in euros, top-ups via the app without reinstalling a profile, and hotspot sharing is allowed. Its page indicates, however, that there is no 5G.

In terms of price, it is second per GB: €0.78/GB on the 50 GB 30-day plan at €39. The 10 GB plan costs €9 for 7 days and €11 for 30 days, the best price in the comparison for this volume, and the 3 GB 15-day plan is €5. Its unlimited plan is €24 per week, the cheapest for this duration, but at full speed for only 20 GB, then 2 Mbit/s; for 15 and 30 days (€44 and €65), Yesim is cheaper.

    Pros

    • Two networks, Hutch and Mobitel
    • 10 GB for 30 days at €11, 50 GB at €39

    Cons

    • No 5G announced
    • Unlimited, throttled to 2 Mbit/s after 20 to 60 GB depending on the duration
  4. Yesim

    4. Yesim

    7.1/10
€0.93/GBLocal networksData plans from 0.5 to 30 GB, unlimited from 1 to 30 days

The cheapest unlimited plan for 10 to 30 days, 30 GB for €28

Yesim is the eSIM for unlimited data on long stays: €29.94 for 10 days, €39 for 15 days, and €57 for a month, the lowest prices in the comparison for these durations. Over a month, it is €9 cheaper than Airalo. However, its page warns that speeds may be reduced beyond a daily limit, without specifying the amount. For one week, it is €24.50, just above Ubigi.

In classic plans, it sells 30 GB for €28 for 30 days, which is €0.93/GB, the third lowest price per GB, and 1 GB for 30 days at €2.50. The limitations: no Sri Lankan operator is named in the text of its page before purchase (“3G, 4G, LTE or 5G depending on the provider”), and support is via chat only.

    Pros

    • The cheapest unlimited option in the comparison for 10 to 30 days, €57 per month
    • 30 GB at €28 and 1 GB for 30 days at €2.50

    Cons

    • Sri Lankan operator not specified before purchase
    • Daily limit on unlimited data not specified, chat support only
  5. Saily

    5. Saily

    6.7/10
€1.37/GBLocal networksData plans from 1 to 20 GB, unlimited from 5 to 30 days

The cheapest 5-day unlimited plan, ad blocker, 24/7 chat

Saily is the eSIM from Nord Security, the publisher of NordVPN. The app is simple, featuring an ad and tracker blocker and built-in web protection, and the chat responds 24/7. On the Wi-Fi of a guesthouse in Ella or a café in Galle, it's a real plus.

Its 20 GB for 30 days at €27.49 comes to €1.37/GB, the highest price per GB, just cents away from voilà eSIM. The 1 GB for 7 days costs €3.49 and the 10 GB €17.99. Its unlimited is the cheapest for 5 days, €16.99, with 3 GB per day at full speed then 1 Mbit/s, but it rises to €63.99 per month, more expensive than Yesim. And it does not announce the Sri Lankan operator before purchase.

    Pros

    • Cheapest 5-day unlimited, €16.99
    • Built-in ad and tracker blocker, 24/7 chat

    Cons

    • The highest price per GB of the five
    • Sri Lankan operator not specified before purchase

Which network to choose in Sri Lanka: Dialog, SLT-Mobitel or Hutch?

Since the acquisition of Airtel Lanka by Dialog, completed on August 30, 2024, Sri Lanka has three networks. Dialog is the first, with more than half of the subscribers according to OperatorWatch, and Opensignal awarded it the top prizes for coverage and reliability in February 2026. SLT-Mobitel is the fastest: Opensignal gave it all four speed awards, and Ookla designated it the best mobile network in the country in the third and fourth quarters of 2025, according to the Daily Mirror. Hutch is the smallest of the three.

5G is very recent: the TRCSL regulator issued licenses to Dialog and SLT-Mobitel on December 19, 2025, with 100 MHz each in the 3.5 GHz band, according to Newswire. Hutch does not have any. Regarding eSIM, none of the five providers go through Dialog: voilà eSIM uses Hutch, Airalo uses SLT-Mobitel (and Hutch for its Ella+ eSIM), Ubigi uses Hutch and Mobitel, while Yesim and Saily do not announce an operator. All offers are gathered on our Sri Lanka eSIM comparator.

Does your usual plan work in Sri Lanka?

Not by default: Sri Lanka is outside the European Union, and most plans charge for data per MB, often several euros per MB. Some high-end or travel-oriented plans include a data allowance usable in Sri Lanka, but it is never automatic: the country must be explicitly listed in your operator's destinations, and the allowance is often limited to a few dozen GB per month.

For others, you have to buy a travel pass from your operator, often around €30 for a few GB to a few dozen GB. At that price, an eSIM does much better: 3 GB for 30 days costs €5.50 with voilà eSIM, and 20 GB is €16.50 with Airalo. Before leaving, turn off data roaming on your regular line and let the eSIM handle the data.

eSIM or tourist SIM card in Sri Lanka?

Operators sell tourist SIM cards right in the arrivals hall of Bandaranaike Airport, and they are very inexpensive. At SLT-Mobitel, the 7-day plan offers 15 GB for Rs 821 and the 30-day plan offers 30 GB for Rs 1,540, with unlimited local calls; a tourist eSIM is also possible, and only a passport is required. Dialog offers 20 GB for Rs 1,399, 30 GB for Rs 1,799, or 50 GB for Rs 2,450 with unlimited WhatsApp, at its two shops just after customs, passport mandatory.

For a stay of two weeks or more with lots of data, the tourist SIM is therefore unbeatable on price, and it provides a local number to call a driver or a guesthouse. Its downsides: queuing at the counter after a long flight, presenting your passport, and removing your regular SIM if your phone only has one slot. The travel eSIM, on the other hand, is installed before departure and works as soon as you land in Colombo. Our rule: eSIM for a few days or to be connected upon arrival, tourist SIM for a long stay with high data consumption.

What is the coverage in Sri Lanka, from Colombo to the highlands?

Colombo, Galle and the south coast, Kandy, the Sigiriya cultural triangle, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa are well covered in 4G, as is the train line heading up to Ella, according to the Kolet coverage guide. The same guide indicates a weaker network above Nuwara Eliya, in the remote sectors of Yala and Wilpattu parks, and on the small roads between two villages.

Download your offline maps in Google Maps or Maps.me before a safari or a hike in the highlands, and note down your accommodation's address. An eSIM that uses two networks, like Ubigi, increases your chances of getting a signal. On Hutch or Mobitel alone, it's better to keep the Dialog tourist SIM in mind if you are spending several days in the most isolated areas.

What to check before leaving for Sri Lanka

Two conditions for the eSIM: an eSIM-compatible phone and carrier-unlocked. iPhones from the XR onwards and Pixel, Galaxy S, and other recent models are; the full list is on our eSIM-compatible phones page. Installation is done in three steps: you purchase the plan, you scan the QR code received by email or install the eSIM from the provider's app, then, upon arrival, you activate data roaming on the eSIM and turn it off on your regular line.

Regarding formalities, the ETA, the electronic travel authorization, remains mandatory. Since May 25, 2026, it is free for a 30-day tourist stay for citizens of about forty countries, including France, according to the France Diplomatie travel advice: check if your country is included on the official site eta.gov.lk, where you can apply with a passport valid for at least six months after entry. To get around, France Diplomatie recommends the PickMe or Uber apps rather than unregistered tuk-tuks: one more reason to have data as soon as you arrive at the airport. If you are combining this with India, our best India eSIM comparison awaits you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for Sri Lanka?
Based on our criteria, voilà eSIM: the cheapest 1 GB 7-day plan in the comparison at €1.90, a 3 GB 30-day plan at €5.50, no blocked applications, an eSIM that is easy to install, an easy-to-use app, and 24/7 human support on the Hutch 4G network. Regarding price per GB alone, Airalo does better, with 50 GB for €33 on SLT-Mobitel, and Yesim sells the cheapest unlimited plans for 10 to 30 days.
How much does a SIM card cost in Sri Lanka?
At the airport, the SLT-Mobitel tourist SIM costs Rs 821 for 15 GB for 7 days and Rs 1,540 for 30 GB for 30 days, including local calls. At Dialog, it's Rs 1,399 for 20 GB and Rs 2,450 for 50 GB. A passport is required. A travel eSIM costs more per GB, from €1.90 for 1 GB with voilà eSIM to €33 for 50 GB with Airalo, but it is installed before departure.
Does my usual plan work in Sri Lanka?
Rarely by default: Sri Lanka is outside the European Union, and without an option or pass, data is charged per MB. Some travel-oriented plans include a data allowance in Sri Lanka: check your operator's list of destinations before leaving. Otherwise, a travel eSIM costs much less.
Is the ETA free for Sri Lanka?
Yes for citizens of about forty countries, including France, since May 25, 2026, for a 30-day tourist or business stay. The ETA remains mandatory: you must request it on the official site eta.gov.lk before departure, which also indicates if your country is affected, with a passport valid for at least six months after entry.
How to use my phone in Sri Lanka?

You need an eSIM-compatible and unlocked phone, and a data-only travel eSIM does not have a Sri Lankan number: calls are made via WhatsApp or another app. For a long stay with very high data consumption, a local tourist SIM is cheaper. We detail everything in our article on the advantages and disadvantages of the eSIM.
How many GB should I plan for a trip to Sri Lanka?
Count on 1 to 3 GB for one week with Google Maps, PickMe, and WhatsApp, 10 GB for a two-week tour from the cultural triangle to the southern coast, and unlimited if you share your connection or watch videos.
