eSIM for smartwatches
Cellular smartwatches (Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Pixel Watch in 4G/5G versions) carry an eSIM that lets them call, message and use data without the phone nearby. That eSIM does not take an independent plan: it duplicates your existing mobile line through an option from your own carrier (called multi-SIM, 4G calling or watch eSIM depending on the brand).
Why it matters when travelling
One important point before leaving: ordinary travel eSIMs do not install on watches. The watch uses the line-sharing option of your home carrier, so abroad its cellular connectivity follows the roaming rules of your main plan, not those of your travel eSIM.
In practice that is not a problem: as soon as the watch is within reach of the phone (Bluetooth) or of a known wifi network, it goes through them, with no cellular network of its own. The watch stays fully usable while travelling, as long as the phone is not far.
The misconception
“I can install my travel eSIM on my Apple Watch.”
You cannot: watches only accept the line sharing offered by the carrier of your main line. No consumer travel eSIM provider supports watches. The travel eSIM goes in the phone; the watch follows the phone.
What it changes when you compare
If you use a cellular watch, it changes nothing about choosing your travel eSIM: compare plans for your phone as usual. Just make sure the watch option's roaming is switched off when you leave the EU, so it does not quietly burn roaming on your home line.
Compare eSIM plans by destinationThe rat's tip: Outside the EU, put the watch in cellular power-reserve mode or switch its cellular option off: it will keep doing everything through the phone and wifi, and your roaming bill will stay at zero.

Frequently asked questions
How do I activate an Apple Watch eSIM?
Through the iPhone's Watch app, under Mobile Data: activation goes through your carrier's multi-SIM option (paid at most carriers, a few euros a month). The watch then shares your number: calls and texts reach both.
Does the watch eSIM work abroad?
It depends on your carrier and destination: within the EU, usually yes, like your plan. Outside the EU, the watch's cellular connectivity depends on the roaming terms of the multi-SIM option; over Bluetooth and wifi through the phone, it works everywhere, for free.
Does a 4G watch work without the phone?
Yes for the essentials (calls, messages, streaming, GPS), which is the whole point: going for a run without the phone while staying reachable. It needs the multi-SIM option active at your carrier, and battery life drops faster on cellular.
