SM-DP+ (the server that delivers eSIMs)

The SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation +) is the secure server that prepares, encrypts and delivers eSIM profiles to phones. The SM-DP+ address is that server's address: it is encoded in the activation QR code, and provided in plain text (with an activation code) for manual installation. It is a cog of the GSMA standard, common to every carrier.

Why it matters when travelling

You meet the SM-DP+ address in one concrete case: manual installation, when you cannot scan the QR code (only one device available, unreadable QR, temperamental camera). The provider then gives two pieces of information: the SM-DP+ address (something like rsp.example.com) and the activation code, to type into the settings.

If the install fails with a “profile not found” message, it is almost always a typo in the address or an already-used code: each activation code works only once. In that case, only the provider's support can reissue a profile.

The misconception

“The QR code contains my plan.”

It does not: the QR code only carries the SM-DP+ server address and a single-use activation code. The profile itself is downloaded from the server at install time. That is why an already-used QR no longer works: the code has been consumed, even though the QR image still exists.

In practice, device by device

On iPhone

  1. Settings, Mobile Data, Add eSIM, then Other options and Enter details manually.
  2. Fill in the SM-DP+ address then the activation code, exactly as supplied.
  3. If a confirmation code is requested, it is in the provider's email.

On Android

  1. Settings, Network & internet, SIM, Add eSIM, then “Need help? / Enter code manually” depending on the brand.
  2. The expected format sometimes combines everything into one string: LPA:1$smdp-address$activation-code.
  3. Respect capitals and symbols: a single wrong character makes the download fail.

What it changes when you compare

A provider that clearly shows the SM-DP+ address and the activation code next to the QR code (instead of the QR alone) saves you in edge cases. It is a small experience detail the esimrat comparisons credit: friction shows on bad days, not on good ones.

Compare eSIM plans by destination

The rat's tip: The QR is displayed on the very phone that should scan it? Two ways out: show it on another screen (laptop, tablet, a friend's phone), or switch to manual entry with the SM-DP+ address. The second always works, even alone on an island.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my eSIM's SM-DP+ address?

In the purchase confirmation email or the provider's app, next to the QR code, often under a “manual installation” link. If it is not there, support will give it: there is nothing secret about it, the activation code is the personal part.

What if the profile will not download?

Check what you typed character by character, make sure you are on stable wifi, and try again. If the message says the code is already used or invalid, contact support: activation codes are single-use and only the provider can issue a new one.

SM-DP+ and SM-DS, what is the difference?

The SM-DP+ stores and delivers profiles; the SM-DS is a directory letting the phone discover on its own that a profile is waiting, with no QR code (activation by notification). Both belong to the GSMA consumer eSIM standard.
